Partnership with elite school provides solid edge for future of female cricket

Wilston Norths Junior Cricket Club today announced an exciting new partnership with prestigious secondary school St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School in Ascot, designed to take the skill level and performance of the school’s female cricketers to the next level.

The partnership has seen Wilston North’s director of coaching, Wes Hosking, design, implement and oversee St Margaret’s cricket program including training sessions, trials, grading and inter-school competition matches. Already off to a flying start, the program’s inaugural trials session last week saw over 30 girls from Years 7 through to 12 push their case for selection in the 1st and 2nd XI teams.

To further bolster the school’s cricketing stocks, well known former Australian Test and one day player Dirk Wellham recently joined St Margaret’s teaching staff and will support the program through involvement in a coaching and mentoring role.

Wilston Norths club president Chris Shay said he was happy to see the partnership come to fruition after careful planning and consultation over the last few months.

“We’re excited to see the program in action and really pleased to utilise the skills of our newly employed director of coaching to assist growing female cricketing talent in our region,” he said.

Helen Lobegieger, Head of Sport at St Margaret’s said the school was delighted to bring the two organisations together.

“We’re confident this partnership will help create a strong foundation on which our students can strive to be better cricketers and sportswomen”.

Wilston Norths continues to work hard to support and grow girls cricket at the grassroots level. With almost 30 girls playing in the Woolworths Cricket Blast program and three teams in the Brisbane Norths Junior Cricket Association’s U11, U13 & U15 competitions, the future of women’s cricket is looking stronger than ever.
